This art award, named after Max Oscar Arnold, whose doll factory was one of the most important employers for the town for many years, has been presented by an independent specialist jury in the name of the town since 1995.  It is regarded as one of the most important international accolades of its kind and is even referred to as the 'Oscar for the doll makers'.
The award ceremony, which covers a total of 14 categories, takes place every year as part of the International Doll Festival in Neustadt and Sonneburg, Germany. This year it was held on May 25th.

The specialist jury, selected each year by the Culture Senate of Neustadt, judges the entries on the basis of artistic and artisanal criteria. Moonyoung received the gold lifetime achievement award: 'Best Complete Works of an Established Artist' and Cindee received the award for 'Best Fantasy Doll'.

Previous NIADA Lifetime Achievement Award winners are: Chris and Peter Meder, 2018; Jane Davies, 2009; Lisa Lichtenfels, 2002; and Elisabeth Flueler-Tomamichel, 2001.

NIADA artists who have won in individual categories are: Uwe Haukenfrers and Jürgen Peper, 2002; Moonyoung Jeoung, two categories in 2004 and silver in 2006; and Inga Ivashchenko, 2019.
